Cases

These case studies are glimpses of how the components of the 5-S system can positively affect your business or organizational challenges.

1 A national oil corporation wanted to be more successful in their retail oil business and to significantly reduce its cost structure. For this project we were in competition with five major consulting houses. One aspect of our winning bid was a component that enabled existent company resources to implement much of the work through a facilitated program. Over the life of this consultation we reduced overall costs by nearly $300 million and staffing levels by 40 percent. This was done entirely through voluntary programs and processes. Satisfaction with this project among the shareholders is very high, and the needs of the workforce have been recognized and responded to in a positive way. This company is now on a growth path and revenues are increasing.

2 Palomar was engaged by a large real estate investment firm to help realize the unusual task of re-visioning an already successful business model. The challenge was to enable a future-oriented outlook that built on the strengths of the current plan, and incorporate safeguards and new initiatives to allow the current success to continue in the years to come.

We worked with the client to create a structural framework based on competitive intelligence. After exploring their vision and business model we were able to examine and build upon a number of areas where they could strengthen their approach and create new revenue streams.

3 A consumer food products company asked us to create realistic business scenarios for the future of their industry, and to facilitate creation of effective strategies to address the future opportunities and threats. The scenario work included technical and social analysis of genetically modified foods, food safety regulations, food security issues and other industry concerns.

A major component of this consultation was responding to a request from the corporate leadership to train and transfer future-thinking skills to the senior management of the company. This was achieved successfully through a custom-designed Palomar course. The company still uses the processes and skills today. The result of this work has been an enhanced growth strategy for the company, investments in bio-technology, acquisition of international assets, and initiatives to influence the development of public policy in the areas of food security and agricultural issues.

4 We were engaged by a small college in the Midwest to facilitate a re-assessment of their strategy. At the time, they faced a dire financial situation, and while they were working very seriously to handle the daily challenges of financial management, they knew that if they didn't create a new strategy for the college, these crises could seriously threaten the future of the institution. We applied a scenario to strategy process with a diverse cross-section of the college, including administration, the faculty, students and the Board, to work through a strategy that could provide for a more promising future for the college. The program was successful and the small college is now better positioned to sustain itself in the competitive education sector.
